How to Wash & Store Strawberries
Prep time: 5 minutes
Serving size: However many berries you want to eat!
Ingredients:
- 1 punnet of fresh strawberries
- Cold running water
- Optional: 1 part white vinegar
- Optional: 3 parts cold water
- Clean tea towel or paper towels
Instructions:
Step 1: Wait to Wash
- Do not wash the entire punnet when you bring it home.
- Only wash the amount of strawberries you are ready to eat right now. This prevents the berries from absorbing excess water, which speeds up spoilage and mold growth.
Step 2: Rinse Gently
- Place the portion of strawberries you’re eating in a colander.
- Rinse them gently under cold running water.
- Use your fingers to lightly rub away any visible dirt.
- For a deep clean: Soak the berries in a bowl of cold water mixed with a splash of white vinegar (about 1 part vinegar to 3 parts water) for 1-2 minutes. The vinegar helps kill surface bacteria and mould spores. Make sure to rinse them thoroughly with plain cold water afterward to remove the vinegar taste.
Step 3: Dry Completely
- Spread the rinsed strawberries out on a clean tea towel or paper towels.
- Gently pat them dry. Do not rub, as this can cause bruising.
- Ensure the berries are completely dry before eating or storing, as moisture is the main cause of premature spoilage.
Tip for Storage: Keep unwashed strawberries in their original container or a loosely covered container in the refrigerator until you are ready to use them.
